Youth Work & Developmental Support

Grounded in youth work practice, we support young people to build confidence, emotional awareness, and resilience through a relational and strengths-based approach. Our work explores areas such as emotional regulation, identity development, social connection, and building healthy coping strategies. We support young people to navigate challenges, develop communication skills, and increase their capacity for independence in a way that feels safe and achievable.

Through a combination of creative engagement, conversation, and practical skill-building, we meet young people where they are at and tailor supports to their individual needs and interests. This may include goal setting, routine building, community access, and developing life skills, alongside opportunities for self-expression through music and creative arts.

Our approach is centred on connection and trust, creating a safe and supportive space where young people feel heard, understood, and empowered to grow at their own pace.

Individualised Support and capacity Building

We provide tailored, one-on-one or small group support that meets individuals where they are at, recognising that everyone’s needs, strengths, and goals are unique. Our approach is flexible and responsive, allowing supports to evolve over time as confidence, skills, and capacity grow.

Our focus is on building engagement, supporting emotional regulation, and strengthening everyday skills through consistent, meaningful interaction. Through capacity building, we support individuals to develop practical life skills, increase independence, and build confidence in navigating daily environments. This may include developing routines, improving communication and social skills, building coping strategies, and working towards personal goals in a structured yet supportive way.

By combining creative, and relational approaches, we create opportunities for individuals to feel successful, capable, and empowered. Our aim is not only to provide support in the moment, but to build lasting skills that enhance independence, wellbeing, and participation across all areas of life.

Creative & Music-Based Support

Through SJ Therapeutic Arts, a core component of SJ Support Services, we integrate creative practices to support emotional regulation, self-expression, and meaningful engagement. We offer instrumental lessons in drums, voice, piano, bass, and guitar, alongside creative art workshops, providing individuals with a range of ways to explore, express and connect through creativity.

Using music-based experiences, instrumental exploration, and creative modalities such as rhythm, sound, voice, and visual art, we deliver a unique and engaging approach to support. These experiences can assist with emotional processing, communication, focus, and sensory regulation, while also building confidence and a sense of achievement.

Our approach is flexible and individualised, allowing each person to engage in ways that feel natural and enjoyable to them. Whether working towards developing musical skills, exploring creativity for self-expression, or using the arts as a tool for regulation and connection, supports are guided by the individual’s interests, goals, and pace.

When connecting through creativity, we create a supportive environment where individuals feel safe to express themselves, try new things, and build both personal and practical skills that extend beyond the session into everyday life.

Instrumental Lessons

We offer tailored instrumental lessons in drums, voice, piano, bass, and guitar, designed to support learning, creativity, and confidence. Our approach is flexible and student-led, allowing each individual to learn at their own pace while fostering a genuine sense of enjoyment and engagement.

Sessions are adapted to meet the individual’s needs, whether the focus is on building musical skills, supporting emotional regulation, improving attention and focus, or working towards specific personal goals. We incorporate a variety of teaching methods, including structured learning, improvisation, and creative exploration, to ensure each session is meaningful, accessible, and responsive.

Instrumental learning is used not only to develop musical ability, but also as a tool to strengthen confidence, encourage self-expression, and support overall wellbeing. Through consistent, supportive guidance, individuals are encouraged to explore their potential, celebrate progress, and build skills that extend beyond music into everyday life.

School & Inclusion Support

We work in partnership with schools to provide consistent, in-environment support for students who benefit from additional assistance. Our focus is on fostering engagement within the classroom, supporting emotional regulation, and assisting with transitions throughout the school day. By working directly within the school setting, we aim to create a sense of familiarity, safety, and continuity for the student.

We collaborate closely with teachers, support staff, and families to implement inclusive strategies that align with each student’s individual needs, goals, and learning environment. This may include adapting activities, supporting participation in group settings, and providing gentle guidance to help students navigate social and academic expectations.

Our goal is to provide a stable, trusted presence that empowers students to feel supported, confident, and capable of fully participating in their learning. Through a strengths-based and relationship-focused approach, we help build capacity, independence, and a positive connection to the school environment.

SSG and Inclusion Support

We work collaboratively with schools, families, and support teams to contribute to Student Support Groups (SSGs) and inclusion planning processes. Our involvement includes providing observations, engagement tracking, and detailed input to support the development of Disability Inclusion Profiles (DIP), where applicable.

Through consistent communication and a strengths-based approach, we help ensure that each individual’s needs, goals, and progress are clearly understood and reflected across all supports. We contribute insights into engagement, regulation, learning styles, and participation, supporting teams to make informed decisions that promote inclusion and accessibility.

This collaborative approach ensures that support is well-informed, consistent, and aligned with each individual’s needs across both school and external environments. Our goal is to strengthen connections between all stakeholders, creating a unified and supportive framework that enhances the individual’s capacity to engage, participate, and thrive.

Family and Support network Navigation

We work closely with families and broader support networks to promote consistency and continuity across all environments. Through open and ongoing communication, we collaborate with families, support coordinators, educators, and allied professionals to ensure that support strategies are aligned and meaningful.

Our approach includes sharing practical strategies, guidance, and insights to support emotional regulation, engagement, and skill development across home, school, and community settings. By working together, we aim to create a cohesive and supportive network that understands and responds to the individual’s needs in a consistent way.

We recognise the importance of strong, connected support systems, and our goal is to empower families and support networks with the tools and confidence to continue supporting growth, independence, and wellbeing beyond direct sessions. Through this collaborative approach, we help create a unified framework that supports each individual’s ongoing development and participation in all areas of life.
